SDG Monitoring in Germany and Ecuador with remote sensing and GIS. Winter School 2022/23.

Satellite-based Earth Observation Systems are currently undergoing a revolutionary technological development that is giving rise to new methods, products and insights in interdisciplinary academic research in sustainability science. Earth Observation methods range from the analysis of urban as well as rural areas, to the observation of long-term land use modifications and conversions, to the short-term assessment of natural hazards such as droughts and floods. In combination with socio-economic data, it is also possible to assess population groups in different regions of the world. Here, by integrating census and household data, the actual risk from factors favored by global change can be measured.

The use of new and innovative methods of earth observation will be adapted by students from both countries and various disciplines, learning to deal with complex data, to understand and discuss actual transformation processes of complex coupled socio-ecological systems and the dilemma of long-term decision making by the involved political/national actors. The Winter School is conducted by researchers from Geosciences, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the institute for peace and conflict studies carrying out research on the world risk report.

The Winter School is a virtual exchange course (lectures and workshops) with a self study preparation phase. The language will at all time be English.
